To celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the CDJ, Pioneer DJ tasked us with creating a limited edition fanzine which would tell the story of the creation and evolution of the iconic CDJ.
The fanzine was split into 3 decade sections from 1994-2004, 2004-2014 and 2014-2024. Each decade would feature in-depth discussions with the engineers who created the core CDJ products and interviews with prominent DJs from each time period. To reflect this we came up with the name “Deckades” - a simple play on words that combined decades with the term decks (an abbreviation used by DJs to describe their kit), that elegantly summed up the nature of the fanzine.
Working closely with Pioneer DJ and their writers we approached each spread as an opportunity to showcase beautiful design and imagery from the 3 decades. The fanzine was a true melting pot of content, with original design sketches of the products themselves, unique club photography and a trip down memory lane, showing the ads of all the past CDJ products.
For us this wasn't just a celebration of the CDJ, but also a celebration of our relationship with Pioneer DJ. Showcasing 30 years of our work with the company we have come to know so well.
We’re flattered that the fanzine has garnered quite a lot of attention; being featured as a story on the likes of DJ Mag and even The Evening Standard.
If you're one of the lucky few to own a copy, be sure to keep it safe, it might just be worth a pretty penny one day.
